Exports of lemons from Uzbekistan decreased by 37% in January-October 2021

The volume of lemon exports from Uzbekistan decreased by 37% in physical terms in January-October 2021 compared to the same months in 2020, but turned out to be almost 6% higher than in the same period in 2019. Given the increased demand for lemons in the pandemic 2020, the volume of lemon exports in physical terms from Uzbekistan is returning to the pre-pandemic level, EastFruit analysts say.

According to the Customs Committee of the Republic, the export of lemons from Uzbekistan from the beginning of January to the end of October 2021 amounted to 3.7 thousand tonnes worth $3.8 million. For comparison, the export volume in the same period of 2020 amounted to 5.9 thousand tonnes, and in January-October 2019 – 3.5 thousand tonnes. In other words, lemon exports from Uzbekistan are returning to the level in pre-pandemic years.

According to EastFruit analysts, in total, Uzbekistan exported 5.7 thousand tonnes of lemons worth $12.9 million in 2019 – 3 times more in physical terms and 4.5 times more in export earnings compared to the previous 2018. Despite an increase in exports in 2020 in physical terms by 21%, revenue decreased by 35%.

As of April 2020, the annual production of lemons in Uzbekistan was about 30 thousand tonnes. In August 2021, a presidential decree was adopted to increase subsidies for the production and export of lemons.
