According to operational data from regional governing bodies of the agro-industrial complex, as of November 11, 2020, about 5.9 million tons of vegetables were harvested in Russia, which is 5.4% more than the same period in 2019 (5.6 million tons).
Additionally, 1.14 million tons were grown in winter greenhouses, which is 25.2% more than last year (918,700 tons). The harvests of greenhouse cucumbers were 689,300 tons (+24.9%) and tomatoes were 436,100 tons (+23.3%). Taking into account the spring greenhouses, 1.19 million tons of vegetables were harvested from covered ground for the specified period. The top ten regions for the production of vegetables in winter greenhouses include Lipetsk, Moscow, Volgograd, Kaluga, Novosibirsk regions, Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, the Republics of Karachay-Cherkessia, Tatarstan and Bashkortostan.

According to Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture, 4.73 million tons of vegetables were harvested from open fields as of the reporting date. The main crops were onions (20.6%), tomatoes (20.3%), cabbage (19.3%) and carrots (13.8%).
State-supported measures contributed to the development of the industry. Within the framework of the incentive subsidy, the constituent entities of Russia have the right to choose priority areas, including open field vegetable growing, which allows the regions to provide additional support to farmers engaged in the production of vegetables. In addition, there are mechanisms of grant support for farmers and cooperatives, concessional lending is carried out, and a set of other measures is being implemented.
