Record exports of Georgian table grapes in 2021

Georgia exported 245 tonnes of table grapes in October 2021. Exports halved comparing to September 2021, but October volumes are still high. Such high volumes have never been seen in October, but it would be surprising to see an increase over September, given that exports were considerably high  in September.

The increase in volumes compared to October last year amounted to 40%. Russia remained the main export destination, accounting for 92% of Georgian table grape exports. Prices fell from $740 (FOB) in September 2021 to $720 in October 2021. This is a seasonal trend, as most of the October exports of table grapes come from refrigerators and buyers pay less.

So far, Georgia has exported 775 tonnes of table grapes since the beginning of the season in September. This is 3.2 times more than in the same period of 2020, which was a record high itself.

Russia has played a great role in the success of Georgian table grape exports. The country’s share in exports is close to 100% in both 2020 and 2021. Due to temporary supply problems, Russia bought practically everything from Georgia this year, not just table grapes. Will this continue next year? There is no clear answer, as the Russian market is known for its volatility in terms of exports. For further success, diversification of export destinations should be a priority for Georgian table grape producers and exporters.
