Imereti region, which is in the West of the Black Sea country, is distinguished by the mild climate, high humidity and UV index, as well rare snow days, which makes the region a famous producer of export-quality culinary herbs and greenhouse vegetables.
Back in 2017, FAO team of international experts has visited the region on EBRD assignment within the EastFruit project. Experts from Israel were pleasantly surprised with the high quality of greenhouse produce and the limited use of pesticides required for its production. Though, the analysis of value chain showed untapped opportunities in improving production efficiency and expanding destinations of international trade. Investment opportunities were presented at the “Herbs of Georgia” conference in Kutaisi – the 2nd largest city of the country and a “capital” of the region.
To build on this opportunity and with the ambition to implement a “best in class” Greenhouse Cluster, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia has initiated the development of Imereti Agro Zone project – a centrally managed and fully serviced greenhouse cluster. Imereti Agro Zone, owned by the State Rural Development Agency, offers a designated area of 171 ha for greenhouse vegetables production in two locations in Tskaltubo municipality (110 ha) and Baghdati municipality (61ha) for potential investors into high-tech, low tech (including the foil, tunnels, and net houses) greenhouses and ancillary services.
Agro zone offers a “turnkey” provision of high capacity and competitively priced utilities, including electricity, gas and water, supply/drainage, fully managed and serviced by Imereti Agro Zone (IAZ) and/or IAZ subsidiary companies.
Single-window state services will be offered to greenhouse cluster tenants – like obtaining quality insurance and phytosanitary certificates according to different export market requirements, import and export declarations, completion of required state registration at the Ministry of Justice of Georgia.
The project provides foreign investors a rare opportunity to purchase or rent completely developed and serviced agricultural land in Georgia through a pre-defined approval mechanism.
The project is supported by a wide range of ancillary services, including Collecting Logistics Centre (CLC) and a Horticultural Training and Demo Center (HTDC), which are also open for partnership with international operational and maintenance companies, educational centers, and agro-input suppliers respectively.
Imereti Agricultural Zone invites potential investors to participate in the existing opportunities through the Request for Proposals (RfP), until the 31st of December 2021. Requirements and detailed procedure is described here
