According to EastFruit analysts, apple prices in Belarus are kept at an unusually high level, given the oversupply of apples in neighboring markets. At the moment, apples in Belarus cost about the same as in the Russian market, which is not typical, because Russia is the world’s largest apple importer, and apple prices there tend to be the highest in the region.

Experts name two main reasons that keep apple prices high in Belarus. The first reason is the decree on the mandatory range of Belarusian products in the stores. It means supermarkets ae forced to supply several positions of locally produced apples, as compliance with this decree is tightly monitored. This supports prices for locally produced apples, even if imported ones are of better quality.

Experts believe that another reason is the tightening of control over the re-exports of apples to Russia from sanctioned countries, primarily Ukraine and the European Union, through the Republic of Belarus. This led to a decrease in apple imports, some of which remained on the Belarusian market.

The later start of apple harvesting in Belarus in 2021 also has some indirect influence. Accordingly, the supply of apples on the market may grow sharper than usual in the coming weeks. Therefore, in any case, market participants expect a dynamic decline in apple prices in Belarus in the coming weeks.
