Prices for carrots in Ukraine have increased this week, according to analysts of the EastFruit project. According to key market players, the rise in prices is due to the intensification of trade, since wholesale companies and retail chains have started stocking for the New Year holidays.

Today, growers in the main production regions ship high-quality carrots at 6-8 UAH/kg ($0.22-0.29/kg), which is on average 17% more expensive than at the end of the last week. It is worth noting that most farms have suspended sales of carrots in anticipation of an even greater rise in prices and laid the bulk for storage. They offer only surplus for sale, and as a result, the supply on the market has slightly decreased. This, in turn, contributed to the growth of selling prices in this segment.

Note that the price of high-quality carrots in Ukraine is now two times higher on average than last year. Nonetheless, market participants do not exclude that the upward trend in prices may be a temporary phenomenon. In their opinion, a further price rise may encourage growers to start selling carrots from storage, which will lead to an increase in supplies and a decrease in prices.

This week, the Ukrainian market recorded a positive trend in prices for carrots and beets, according to analysts of the EastFruit project . According to the growers, the rise in prices in this segment was made possible by the intensification of the sales rates of carrots and beets. At the same time, the supply on the Ukrainian market has slightly decreased.

Today, growers in the main production regions deliver high-quality carrots at 4-7.50 UAH/ kg ($ 0.13-0.25 per kg), which is on average 29% more expensive than at the end of the last week. At the same time, prices for table beets increased by an average of 24% over the week, and at the moment the main transactions are carried out in the range of 4-7 UAH/kg ($ 0.13-0.25 / kg).

It should be noted that positive price dynamics is observed only in the segment of high-quality root vegetables that are suitable for storage.

Today carrots in Ukraine are on average 33% more expensive than at the end of August last year. Prices for beetroot increased by an average of 36% over the year. At the same time, market participants do not exclude that the upward trend in prices in this segment may be a temporary phenomenon, since in many regions of Ukraine the harvest of root vegetables is  still ongoing.

Managers of large vegetable farms claim that they sold only about 20-30% of the total volume of potatoes and carrots put in storage last fall by the start of the last ten days of January and stated, “we have not entered a new year with such large stocks for many years.” According to observations by operators of the horticulture market, large stocks of products have accumulated in the warehouses of traders-importers.

EastFruit previously reported that that intensification of imports meant potatoes were being offered on the Moldovan market at $0.17-0.23/kg and carrots at $0.14-0.20/kg by the end of the second week of January.

According to trade enterprises, at present, imports of potatoes and carrots especially have decreased to a minimum due to the large inventories. This usually occurs in winter during cold snaps and heavy snowfalls causing logistical problems, but in January 2021, this has not been the case. So far, importers simply do not need root crops and they are becoming more expensive almost everywhere else in the region.

In the Ukrainian root crop market, there is a tendency for prices to rise for these products, according to analysts of the EastFruit project. The main reason for the rise in prices for carrots and beets is the seasonal reduction in the supply.

Today, carrots are offered for sale at 3-5 UAH/kg ($0.11-0.18/kg), which is on average 22% more expensive than at the end of last year. The price for beets during this period also increased by 22% on average and shipped at 3-5 UAH/kg ($0.11-0.18/kg) as well.

Market participants explained the rise in prices in the root crops segment is from a noticeable reduction in these products on the market. To date, the sales of root crops from unequipped storage facilities are almost complete and the supply of substandard carrots and beets has also significantly decreased. In turn, this allowed producers to raise prices for quality products.

It should be noted that as a result of the rise in prices today, prices for carrots and table beets in Ukraine are already on average 31% higher than in the same period last year.
