EastFruit analysts draw attention to the continuing upward trend in demand for quince in Russia. Obviously, this is due to the growing interest of consumers in a healthy diet, and quince has long been considered a healthy and healing fruit.

Quince imports to Russia increased by 36% in 2021, continuing the trend of 2020. Turkey remains the main supplier of quince to the Russian market, accounting for more than 80% of all imports. Turkey increased the exports of quince to Russia by more than 60% in a year. Azerbaijan remained second, but its quince exports to the Russian Federation decreased in 2021. The export of quince from Uzbekistan to Russia increased by 20% compared to 2021.

Retail prices vary widely in Russia – from 100 to 300 or more RUB/kg ($1.3-3.8/kg). At the same time, there are a lot of quinces produced in Russia sold cheaper than imported ones. Growers in the southern regions of Russia offer quince in bulk at prices starting at 40 RUB/kg ($0.50/kg). The production of quince is considered by many to be even more profitable than the production of apples. However, Turkish quince dominates in the Russian retail trade so far.

By the way, it is Turkey that is the world’s largest exporter of quince, exporting about 20 000 tonnes per year. The Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Azerbaijan, Syria, Germany, France and Chile are also the largest global exporters of quince. Uzbekistan is the last in the Top-10 largest exporters of quince. In recent years, the production and export of quince has also been actively developing in Serbia.

The growth in demand for quince in Ukraine and Moldova has also pushed many farmers to pay attention to this fruit in recent years. Therefore, an increase in the supply of quince is expected in the near future there as well.
