This week, the atmospheric temperatures at night in Moldova plummeted from -13 to -18 degrees Celsius, a ten-year low. However, experts agree that frost in itself does not pose a serious threat to orchards but the thaw predicted for next week could bring problems.

Agronomists of horticultural enterprises note that frosts came at a time when fruit plantations had been dormant for a long period of time. A drop in temperature from -16 to -18 degrees in the northern regions of Moldova, where most of the pome (apple) orchards are concentrated, does not pose a great danger under the current conditions.

However, the current frost wave is much riskier for stone fruits, especially peaches and apricots, but their plantations are mainly located in the central and southern regions of the country. Thankfully, there the temperature at night has not yet dropped below -13 degrees. Operational inspection of the orchards has not yet revealed mass freezing of flower buds. However, the details of the situation can be judged after a thorough survey of the orchards next week.

At the end of this week and next week, the hydrometeorological service of Moldova predicts warming in some areas up to +10 degrees Celsius. According to experts, such a scenario is not desirable and may cause a forced exit from a state of dormancy for some species of fruit orchards. If the country is subsequently covered by the next wave of frosts within the range of -13 to -15 degrees, then the consequences for the fruit will be quite severe.

By the end of 2020, the total area of orchards in Moldova amounted to 50,000 hectares of apples; 22,700 hectares of plums; 3,700 hectares of apricots; 4,100 hectares of sweet cherries (черешневых in Russian); 3,800 hectares of sour cherries (вишневых in Russian); and 5,200 hectares of peaches. These statistics were according to estimates by agricultural organizations and based on data from the Agency for Interventions and Payments in Agriculture (AIPA) and the National Bureau of Statistics.

Since 2016, apple and peach orchards in Moldova have decreased by 2,500 hectares and 2,100 hectares respectively. While the plantations of sweet cherry and sour cherry have expanded by 1,100 hectares and 600 hectares respectively, apricots by 500 hectares, and plums by 400 hectares.

Experts note that over the course of the last five years, the largest segment of new fruit plantations was still apple orchards, which grew at least 1,000-1,500 hectares annually. Uprooting old apple orchards did occur, but it was to prepare for the planting of new orchards.

In the peach segment, the process of plantation renewal was even slower. Peach orchards of old varieties originally aimed at sales within Moldova and neighbouring Ukraine are being cut down. In the last two years, farmers have begun to plant orchards of fig (flat) varieties. However, the scale is still small due to the lengthy and complicated variety testing procedure and its inclusion in the state register of varieties recommended for production in Moldova. Without this, subsidizing such investment projects from the National Agricultural Development Fund is problematic.

The most dynamically expanding segment is for sweet cherry production. The rate for the last five years for cultivating new plantations has exceeded the rate of uprooting old orchards. In the last two or three years, apricot cultivation has been attached to this segment. Farmers are planting apricot orchards to keep the stable workforce busy for longer during the growing season. Yet, the production of sweet cherries for export is considered the main activity.
