The United States banned the imports of avocado from Mexico, and prices in the domestic market rose sharply, while in another part of the world, in Uzbekistan, avocado fell in price by 2 times. However, even before this ban, avocado prices in Uzbekistan decreased by about 25% due to another factor – the elimination of import customs duties.

EastFruit analysts explain that these factors have led to the fact that 3.5 months ago avocados, considered one of the most expensive fruits in Uzbekistan, have become much more affordable for many consumers in the country.

In the first ten days of October 2021, the government of Uzbekistan decided to exempt the import of a number of fruits, which included citrus fruits, exotic fruits, among them avocado, from customs duties. Prior to the decision, a customs duty rate of 10–20% but not less than $0.2/kg was applied, when importing these fruits. Of course, the decision by the government was very positive for consumers, as due to climatic conditions, Uzbekistan cannot grow the vast majority of fruits included in the list.

Note that avocados are sold in the supermarkets of Uzbekistan by piece.

As a result of the elimination of customs duties, retail prices for avocados in Uzbekistan decreased on average from 24 000 to 18 000 UZS/piece (from $2.2 to $1.66), i.e. by 25%, from the beginning of November to the end of December 2021. These are the best-selling green varieties of avocado in Uzbekistan and inexpensive on the global market.

In the early months of 2022, the global avocado market was rocked by an event that sent prices plummeting. The United States, the world’s largest importer of avocados, banned the import of avocados from Mexico, which in turn is the world’s largest exporter of avocados, as EastFruit wrote. The total value of avocado exports from Mexico to the US is estimated at about $3 billion, and the share of Mexico in total imports of avocados to the US is about 90%.

“Given already record high prices for avocados in the United States, as well as peak demand during this period of the year, the suspension of imports from the largest supplier country will undoubtedly lead to a shortage of avocados in the country’s supermarkets. In the context of a huge shortage of sea containers in the world, it will not be possible to quickly find a replacement for Mexico and arrange deliveries. After all, Mexico is a neighbor of the United States, and all other major suppliers of avocados in the world are considerably far from the United States. Even if the delivery can be organized, it will take a lot of time,” said Andriy Yarmak, economist at the Investment Centre of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

As a result, there was a huge surplus of Mexican avocados on the global avocado market and prices collapsed. In the USA, on the other hand, there was a shortage and prices rose sharply there.

Returning to Uzbekistan, from the beginning of January to mid-February 2022, retail prices for avocados decreased from 18 000 to 8 800 UZS/piece (from $1.66 to $0.81), i.e. 2 times. Moreover, according to EastFruit specialists, Hass avocados are sold at 8 800 UZS.

Thus, from the beginning of November 2021 to mid-February 2022, due to two factors – the elimination of import customs duties and the US ban on the import of Mexican avocados, retail avocado prices in Uzbekistan decreased from 24 000 to 8 800 UZS/piece, i.e. at least 2.7 times. In other words, in just 3.5 months, one of the most expensive fruits has become much more affordable for many consumers in the country.

The US announced a total ban on avocado imports from Mexico after a US plant safety inspector checking avocados prepared for shipment to the US received threats on his official phone.

According to EastFruit analysts, it will be almost impossible to replace Mexican avocados in the US market, since Mexico accounted for 92% of all US avocado imports in 2021. The import volume of avocados from Mexico to the United States increased by 8% in physical terms and by 25% in value terms over the year.

“Of course, this is a huge blow to the fruit and vegetable business in Mexico, for which avocados are the main export position, and the United States is the main market. For Mexico, exporting avocados to the US is a $3 billion business,” says Andriy Yarmak, economist at the Investment Centre of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

“Given current record high prices for avocados in the United States, as well as peak demand during this period of the year, the suspension of imports from the largest supplier country will undoubtedly lead to a shortage of avocados in the country’s supermarkets. In the context of a global shortage of sea containers, it will not be possible to quickly find a replacement for Mexico and arrange deliveries. After all, Mexico is a neighbor of the United States, and all other major global suppliers of avocados are far from the United States. Even the delivery itself, if it can be arranged, will take a lot of time. Therefore, most likely, in the near future the two countries will try to solve this problem,” adds Andriy Yarmak.

EastFruit analysts note that the US is by far the world’s largest importer of avocados. Mexico, by almost the same margin, is the world’s largest exporter. Therefore, the cessation of trade between the two largest global players in the avocado market is a severe shock for the global avocado market.

A market-wide halt in avocado imports from Mexico to the US was confirmed late on Saturday ahead of the Super Bowl in American football, the biggest selling opportunity of the year for Mexican avocado growers. In fact, there are no problems with the supply of avocados for the Cup, since these volumes have already been delivered to the USA.

American media reports that avocados have become the latest victim of drug cartels fighting for territory and extortion from avocado growers in the western state of Michoacán, the only state in Mexico fully authorized to export to the US market. The US government has suspended all imports of Mexican avocados “until further notice” after a threatening message was received by a US quarantine inspector in Mexico, the Mexican Department of Agriculture said in a statement.

“The US health authorities … made the decision after one of their officials inspecting in Uruapan, Michoacán, received a threatening message on his official mobile phone,” the department wrote.

The import ban was introduced on the same day that the Mexican Avocado Growers and Packers Association unveiled the advertisement for this year’s Super Bowl. For almost a decade, Mexican exporters ran expensive ads trying to permanently associate the consumption of guacamole (a traditional avocado-based dish popular in Mexico and the US) with the American Football Super Bowl tradition.

This year’s Mexican avocado ad in the US features Julius Caesar and a group of gladiators in front of the Colosseum. They settle their apparent differences by enjoying guacamole and avocados.

Since avocados are also grown in the United States, US inspectors are working in Mexico to make sure exported avocados do not carry diseases that could harm US crops. It wasn’t until 1997 that the US lifted a ban on the Mexican avocado that had been in place since 1914 to prevent a number of weevils, scab and other pests from entering American farms. Inspectors work for the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

This is not the first time that violence in Michoacán, where the Jalisco cartel is leading a turf war against a group of local gangs known as the United Cartels, has threatened avocados, the state’s most lucrative crop.

Following a previous incident in 2019, the USDA warned of the possible consequences of an attack or threat against US inspectors. In August 2019, a group of USDA inspectors came under a “direct threat” in Ziraquaretiro, a city west of Uruapan. Although the agency did not elaborate on what happened, local authorities say the gang robbed the truck carrying the inspectors at gunpoint.

At the time, the USDA wrote in a letter that “in future situations that result in a security breach or pose an imminent physical threat to the well-being of APHIS personnel, we will immediately suspend the program.”

Many avocado growers in Michoacán say drug gangs threaten them or their family members with kidnapping or death unless they pay protection money, sometimes as much as thousands of dollars per acre. On September 30, 2020, a Mexican APHIS employee was killed near the northern border city of Tijuana.

Mexican prosecutors said Edgar Flores Santos was killed by drug dealers who might have mistaken him for a police officer and a suspect was arrested. The US State Department said the investigation “concluded that this unfortunate incident was due to Mr. Flores being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

During the audit of the fruit and vegetable departments of supermarkets in five countries of the region, EastFruit experts analyze, in addition to the range and quality of vegetables and fruits, the levels of their retail prices in stores in Kyiv, Chisinau, Tbilisi, Dushanbe and Tashkent. For the second year now, we have included previously exotic, but rapidly gaining popularity, kiwi and avocado, to the studied fruits.

In November 2021, kiwi prices were the lowest in stores in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi. This is not surprising, since Georgia continues to increase production and exports of kiwi, taking advantage of its climatic conditions. Georgian kiwi is exported to Japan and Germany and is considered one of the sweetest in Europe (see video about kiwis in Georgia).

On average, kiwi costs only $1.38/kg in Tbilisi supermarkets. In Kyiv, where all the kiwis on the shelves are imported, the prices are 35% higher. In Chisinau they are 60% higher, and in Dushanbe you have to pay 2.5 times more for kiwi than in Tbilisi. At the same time, the conditions for growing kiwi in Tajikistan are not worse than in Georgia. For instance, in neighboring Uzbekistan, there are quite a few small kiwi producers, and maybe that’s why kiwi prices are much lower there than in Tajikistan. In Uzbekistan, you can now buy kiwi at retail at $2.14/kg average.

The most expensive avocado, by a huge margin, was found in Tashkent, although you can also try to grow it in Uzbekistan. As with kiwi, Georgian farmers are pioneering avocado cultivation in the region. The first commercial avocado farm has already been established there. It is obvious that all avocados on the shelves of Georgia are still imported, as their prices are relatively high – much higher than in Ukraine and Moldova and approximately at the same level as in Tajikistan.

By the way, avocado price analysis we published last year is available here. The most expensive avocado was in Uzbekistan then, too. The prices for avocados in Uzbekistan have since declined by about $2/kg. The prices in Tajikistan have fallen even more significantly – by $3/kg average.

The cheapest avocado this year was in Kyiv – the average price was only $4.56/kg and decreased by almost $2.5/kg over the year! But in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, the decline in the retail price of avocado was insignificant, which left it in third place in terms of prices, after the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Dnipro.

Learn more about the retail trade of vegetables and fruits, including the sales volumes of kiwi and avocado in supermarket chains during the first international Retail Forum on December 2, 2021 in Kyiv. Registration for participation in this event and in the conference “Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2021. New Investment Opportunities” is available here.

The Georgian Geonuts Company has established the first avocado farm on six hectares in Lanchkhuti municipality, Guria. The company is not ready yet to give full details about the project and assess the future prospects of avocado production in Georgia, but confirms that the orchard has been established and the plants are being monitored. Producers will harvest the first fruits as early as next year, but the first Georgian avocado farm will enter in full production only in 4–5 years.

It is known that the Geonuts Company purchased avocado seedlings from the Italian nursery Vivai Zanzi with the assistance of Green Solutions, the official representative of Zanzi in Georgia. Seedlings and avocado varieties were selected taking into account the climatic conditions of Georgia.

“Avocados is the fastest growing position in the world fruit and vegetable export, outstripping even the best-sellers of recent years like blueberries, cherries, mangoes or durian in terms of foreign trade growth. The global trade in avocados increases by $ 780 million average per year! Therefore, the pioneers of avocado cultivation, of course, fall into a good growing trend, although there are risks – avocados were not grown commercially in Georgia before,” Andriy Yarmak, economist at the Investment Centre of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) says.

Zviad Bobokashvili, Head of the Fruit Crops Research Department of the Research Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, spoke about the prospects of avocado production in Georgia. He noted that attempts to grow avocados in Georgia, in Adjara and Abkhazia regions were already made in the 1940-1950s, but they turned out to be not successful, since the varieties were not frost-resistant, and the climate in winter was much harsher in the middle of the 20th century in Georgia.

“Today the climate of Georgia is much milder, so you can consider growing avocados, although an appropriate selection of varieties requires research and cultivation in small experimental plots. Commercial avocados can withstand a maximum of 5-6 degrees below zero, but there are also varieties that can withstand 10-11 degrees below zero, such as Mexican avocados. Therefore, it is possible that such varieties could be grown in Georgia. Provided that there is frost protection in the farms, varieties such as Haas or Fuerte can also be grown. Avocado is close to citrus crops, so its cultivation is advisable in those regions of Georgia where citrus fruits are traditionally grown, mainly on the Black Sea coast, but before starting it is necessary to conduct research. Global warming allowed growing crops that were previously impossible to cultivate in some regions of Georgia, but implications of global warming are not positive, as the number of climatic extreme events increases with temperature. For instance, periods of drought have become more frequent, which negatively affects all the plants, including subtropical ones,” the expert noted.

Zviad Bobokashvili believes that avocado cultivation could become a growing sector in Georgia if the country continues to research and experiment with different varieties in order to adapt them to local conditions.

The good news for potential Georgian avocado producers is the rapid growth in consumption of these fruits, both in traditional Georgian markets such as Russia and Ukraine, and in most other countries of the world. Turkey, neighboring Georgia, is already making good money on exporting avocados to Russia and Ukraine.

Avocado production in Turkey has tripled over the past five years – up to 18 thousand tons. The export of avocados increased 17 times during this period.

As the Anadolu agency reported with reference to the Institute of Statistics of Turkey (TÜİK), the volume of production of avocado increased by 40.5% in 2020 compared to the previous year, amounting to 5,917 tons. Over the past five years, the volume of avocado production in Turkey has tripled, from 1,950 tons in 2016.

The avocado exports in the past five years amounted to about $3.53 million, in 2020 alone it was $1.48 million, while in 2016 it was only $464. Thus, over the past five years, the volume of avocado exports has grown 17 times.

In 2020, Turkey exported avocados to 34 countries around the world.

Russia became the leading importer of Turkish avocado last year for a total of $308.1 thousand.

In the top-3 importers of Turkish avocado we also have Ukraine with $307.5 thousand and Bulgaria with $135.7 thousand.

Over the past five years, avocado imports to Turkey amounted to $7.35 million, of which $2.71 million were in 2020.

The largest volume of avocado was imported to Turkey from Kenya – $1.79 million. Israel is on the second place, with $325.5 thousand.

Thus, over the past five years, Turkey’s foreign trade in avocado amounted to $10.9 million.

The chairman of the Agricultural Chamber of Antalya Muratpasa region, Nazif Alp, noted that avocados are in great demand today.

“The demand for avocado is growing. There are currently many farmers interested in growing avocados and their investment in the sector is growing” Alp said.

It is important for vegetable, fruit, and berry producers to know which horticulture products are growing most significantly in the world since the demand for those products is constantly increasing. Today, the fastest-growing position in terms of world horticulture exports are avocados. Avocado sales in monetary terms are growing by $780 million annually. This information was presented by Andriy Yarmak, an economist for the Investment Centre of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), during the national online conference “Horticulture of Tajikistan – the best investment niches,” which was held on March 16, 2021.

The event was organized by the EastFruit project with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The partner of the event was the agro-media agency Sapienza.

Mr Yarmak noted that along with avocados, the volume of world blueberry exports is increasing annually by 14%, which in monetary terms is $500 million. Also, bananas, sweet cherries, and raspberries round out the Top-5 positions of world horticulture exports.

Among the products whose world trade is declining the fastest, there are popular positions for investing now such as almonds, apples, garlic, and even kuraga (dried apricots). “However, this does not mean that there is a decrease in the consumption of these goods or even a decrease in their sales. The drop in world trade is only an indicator that there is likely to be pressure on prices in these segments,” explained the FAO economist.

For producers in Tajikistan, the main target audience of the conference, Andriy Yarmak recommended using niche approaches in their search for investment-attractive horticulture products. He also gave the example of Morocco, a country with climatic conditions very similar to southern Tajikistan. He explained that Morocco learned how to effectively find attractive horticultural niches and that “Moroccan exports of fresh berries in the winter reached $500 million and greenhouse tomatoes were $800 million. Neighbouring Uzbekistan earned $70 million from greenhouse tomato exports and Turkmenistan earned $30 million. Meanwhile, Tajikistan continues to import greenhouse tomatoes.”

Read also: Avocados on the rise in Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Tajikistan, and Georgia

Mr Yarmak named some attractive horticulture niches for investment in Tajikistan. Among them were the production of frozen and dried fruit and vegetable products, year-round cultivation and exports of fresh berries, cultivation of seedless early grapes for exports, premium quality large-fruited cherries, greenhouse vegetables, and various types of nuts. For apples specifically, he recommended focusing on growing early apple varieties for exports.

The FAO agricultural market export cautioned that in the course of planning one or more investments in the horticulture business, it is completely unacceptable for a producer’s business plan to be drawn up by sellers of seedlings. Business plans should be prepared by independent specialists. “It is also important to understand that product pricing announced in business planning, as a rule, should assume pricing for modified and finished products. Usually, business plans have had costs for the production of raw materials only. Investments in product refinement are often more expensive than investments in cultivation, but this is often forgotten. Marketing also costs money. Products do not sell themselves but many people forget about this also. Remember, unlimited demand for any product does not exist in nature – demand is always limited,” summed up Andriy Yarmak.

Below is a video of the full version of Andriy Yarmak’s presentation:

Since November 2020, the EastFruit team has decided for the first time to pay attention during our retail audits to two world bestsellers in recent years – kiwis and avocados. According to experts, avocados have already surpassed oranges in terms of world trade volume and occupy a high seventh place in the ranking of the most popular vegetables and fruits in international trade.

Avocados now account for about 3% of the world fruit and vegetable trade, and their exports are growing annually faster than any other fruit, berry, vegetable, or nut products at an average of $783 million per year, which is 12% every year! The annual volume of world trade in kiwis is also growing very quickly at 7% per year (for fresh berries) or by $200 million per year!

Despite the fact that kiwis and avocados are not yet as popular in Central Asia as in Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, their popularity in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan continues to grow.

In Tajikistan, kiwis are more of a table decoration than fruit for daily consumption. A detailed analysis of the kiwi market in Tajikistan can be found here.

During the audit of retail chains in Tajikistan in March 2021, we saw that kiwis were in nearly all stores in Dushanbe and Khujand. Avocados were sold in at least four supermarket chains in the city of Khujand (Amid, Oasis, and Anis chains). However, avocados were completely absent in supermarkets in Dushanbe, the capital city of Tajikistan.

In previous articles, we point out that not all buyers know and have ever tasted avocados. This fruit is sold per piece; prices are set for 1 fruit. In terms of 1 kg, avocados are sold at prices ranging from $9.00 to $11.50 per kg!

Avocado prices have dropped compared to November prices. The colour of avocados sold on supermarket shelves in Tajikistan ranged from dark green to brown. There were also dark-speckled green fruits.

Kiwi prices in Khujand and Dushanbe were approximately the same and this fruit was much more affordable for the consumer. The average retail price for kiwis in Dushanbe supermarkets was $2.34 per kg, while in Khujand supermarkets this fruit cost an average of $2.38 per kg.

Avocados were included for the first time in EastFruit‘s retail audit of supermarket fruit and vegetable departments, which took place in the nine largest cities of five countries on November 24-25, 2020. The main reason for the inclusion of this fruit was because it has shown very high growth rates in world trade in recent years.

“Now many people talk about the phenomenon of growth in world sales of fresh berries, but berries grow by 7-8% per year. Avocados grow by 17.9% per year, more than twice as fast! If I predict that the volume of world trade in avocados will reach the volume of world trade in all types of fresh apples by 2022, I think many, especially in our region, will be greatly surprised. Yet, this is very likely. Now, the world trade in apples is on a downward trend, and avocados in 2019 were exported only 11.5% less than apples,” explains Andriy Yarmak, an economist at the Investment Centre of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

“That is why we decided to add avocado to our regular international audit of supermarket fruit and vegetable departments. After all, if in our region the consumption of avocados is not yet high, this only speaks of the prospects for growth in its sales,” explains the FAO expert.

Were avocados found in the stores of the main retail chains of Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Georgia, and Tajikistan during the audit?

You will be surprised – avocados were found in 91% out of 139 stores of various formats visited by our auditors! In the graph below, this was what the avocado penetration rate looked like in the chain stores of the region where EastFruit operates.

It is obvious from the graph above that avocados are most popular in Ukraine (Kyiv and Odesa at 100%, Dnipro at 94%), where nearly all stores have at least one variety of this fruit, but often several. Hass avocados are very popular in Ukraine, which is almost unavailable in Central Asian countries. Unlike other avocados, Hass takes on a very dark brown almost black skin tone when fully ripe while other common varieties have different shades of green.

Hass tends to be juicier and tastier. The soft flesh inside the Hass avocado even has a slightly sweet taste. It can be spread on bread for delicious sandwiches, especially when lightly sprinkled with salt, pepper, and lemon juice. It is also used in a wide variety of salads, sauces, and even desserts. Hass avocados are more expensive than regular green avocados. All avocado varieties are sold by the piece as a rule in our region.

The popularity of avocados, especially the Hass variety, is due not so much to its taste as to the global interest in proper nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle. In this sense, few other products can compare with avocados, which is why many classify the avocado as a superfood. We are not going to list all of the positive dietary benefits of avocados since this information is easy to find on the web, but it is important to note that this trend has already reached our countries and their market penetration is easy to track on our graph.

The presence of avocados in Moldova was almost on a par with Ukraine. 95% of stores in Chisinau offer this fruit. However, they are mainly offered in the green avocado variety only.

Uzbekistan is a pleasant surprise with more than half of the supermarkets selling avocados. Also, more than half of the Tajikistan markets in Khujand, but slightly less than in Tashkent, offer these fruits. In Dushanbe, only half of the supermarkets sell this exotic product.

Unexpectedly, Georgia, which is generally quite conservative in food preferences, is among the outsiders in terms of avocado penetration. Avocados are considered very exotic and available only in 43% of Tbilisi supermarkets and 33% of Kutaisi supermarkets.

How much do avocados cost? Where is the cheapest place to buy an avocado? See the graph below!

It turns out that the lowest average avocado price as of November 24-25, 2020, was in Chisinau, Moldova at $5.82 per kg. In Tashkent, where avocados were the most expensive, you will have to pay three times more at $14.77 per kg. Tajikistan was slightly cheaper, but not by much. In Georgia where avocados are the least popular, prices for them were relatively low, almost at the same level as in Moldova. Avocados in Ukraine were slightly more expensive, but in this case, Hass sometimes occurred in our monitoring for lack of cheaper versions in the store so comparisons could not be absolutely correct.

Where are avocados grown and who supplies them to our countries?

Mexico is the world leader in terms of avocado exports. Also, this country takes advantage of its proximity to the US market. Supplies of avocados go mainly there controlling almost half (45%) of all world avocado exports! However, Mexican avocados are also actively exported to Europe and most other countries of the world. Chile and Peru as well as Kenya, France, Spain, and even Israel are also rapidly increasing their exports of avocado!

Avocados usually travel to Central Asian countries from the Netherlands. This country is one of the world’s leaders in exports even though it does not grow avocados. These are usually re-exports from other countries. However, some avocados are also supplied to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan directly from producing countries such as Peru, Israel, South Africa, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Turkey.

Ukraine and Moldova also prefer to import avocados in mix deliveries from the Netherlands. However, other direct suppliers like Spain, Israel, and Kenya follow the Netherlands. Georgia, in addition to the Netherlands, buys small volumes of avocados from Turkey and Uganda.

How many avocados are imported to countries of the EastFruit region?

Total imports of avocados are about 9,000-10,000 tons per year and growing rapidly. In 2019, it nearly doubled compared to 2018 and reached $23 million. The leading country is Ukraine, which accounts for more than $20 million in avocado imports. Uzbekistan and Tajikistan import the least of these fruits.

The enormous and growing popularity of avocados has been overshadowed by only one factor – high water consumption of these fruits. “The negative impact of industrial avocado cultivation on the environment is of serious concern to environmentalists. This includes deforestation to make way for new avocado plantations and a decrease in freshwater supplies due to its massive use for irrigating avocado gardens. Therefore, some restaurants in developed countries even actively advertise the rejection of avocados in their recipes in order to neutralize the negative impact on the environment from growing avocados,” explains Andriy Yarmak.

However, not all consumers are joining such initiatives as evidenced by the very rapid growth of the global avocado trade. In addition, many farmers in tropical countries with adequate water supplies are also beginning to take an interest in growing avocados instead of other traditional crops. Who knows, maybe the first avocado plantations will soon appear in our region?
