Uzbekistan: onion prices increased by 25% in the first two weeks of 2022

2022 began with rising prices in the onion sector of Uzbekistan. The average wholesale prices for onions have increased by 25% over the past two weeks, and current price levels are also 25% higher than at the beginning of January 2021, EastFruit analysts note.

According to EastFruit price monitoring, the average wholesale prices for onions increased from 1,600 to 2,000 UZS/kg (from $0.15 to 0.18) from December 31, 2021 to January 14, 2022. Moreover, the sharpest price jump was observed in the first week of 2022 – by 19%.

The current levels of average wholesale prices for onions in Uzbekistan are also 25% higher than on the same date in 2021. For comparison, the average wholesale price on January 14, 2021 was 1,600 UZS/kg ($0.15).

We remind you that onion is one of the most important export commodities in the vegetable segment of Uzbekistan. As EastFruit experts noted in the article “Uzbekistan: TOP-10 Fruit and Vegetable Events of 2021 (Part I)”, 2021 was quite successful for Uzbek onion producers and exporters. Having started well in April 2021, the onion export season turned out to be even longer than usual. As a result, onion exports from Uzbekistan from April to December 2021 reached 184.3 thousand tonnes, which is 19% more than in the same period in 2020.
